Carol Wagstaff to call the Wind, to Strike a Butterfly
In the Norwood Gallery at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery from 26 March to 9 July 2011

Sussex based artist and printmaker Carol Wagstaff has been behind the scenes to discover the stunning fine art and fan collection at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery.

There are over 300 fans from China and Europe in the Museum which were used in different ways. In the Far East fans were an important part of everyday life especially in ceremonial functions. In the royal courts of Europe they were used for sending coded messages.

Carol studied the paintings of Charles Morris and the fan collection. She created drawings and paintings based on the stories or patterns that she saw. Visitors will be able to see some of the historic fans and paintings alongside with Carol’s paintings.

Carol said:  “As a child I was given a Japanese fan which fascinated me and fuelled my interest in the objects and culture of the Far East. One of the Chinese proverbs that for me gives meaning to the fan is ‘To Call the Wind, to Strike a Butterfly’ which I thought charming and encapsulates perfectly the language of the fan.”
