An Elephant Never Forgets - 7 April to 13 August.......
International sculptor Anthony Heywood returns to Worthing, bringing a big surprise with sculpture made from recycled materials. Heywood’s Telly the Elephant caused mayhem at Worthing Museum in 1996 when a blackbird took up residence in one of the recycled TVs forming part of the elephant’s rear end! That exhibition was extended so that the blackbird could tend to her family undisturbed.
Heywood has emerged as one of the key figures in radically transforming the way we think about sculpture. His concerns about the treatment of the natural world are embodied with humour to grab the attention of visitors. He uses found, mass-produced materials such as TV sets, ornaments, plastic bottles and other recycled bric-a-brac to make people look at sculpture in a different way.
Heywood said: "I saw a TV news item about the slaughter of elephants just for their ivory tusks. This made me create some of the sculptures you will see at Worthing Museum. I felt as an artist I wanted to show my concern and anger for the suffering of the elephants as part of the ivory trade."
Anthony has displayed at Bondi Beach in Australia and in the United Arab Emirates.
