Ancient fig garden annual opening
Ancient fig garden annual opening
21st June 2011
The annual open day of the Ancient Fig Garden in Tarring is to be held this year on Saturday 2nd July from 10am to 5pm.
This is an opportunity for the public to visit this ancient garden, which lies within the grounds of Bishop’s Garth, South Street, Tarring, a Grade II Listed Building and 1 and 2 The Fig Garden, Bishop’s Close.
The trees are known to have existed in 1745, although local tradition suggests that they may have been originally planted much longer ago in the days of the Archbishop Thomas A’Becket.
Residents Ann and Richard Warner, say: “It is important to us that the tradition of opening the fig gardens is not lost so we are delighted to open our ancient fig gardens to the public. We welcomed over 400 visitors last year and look forward to welcoming even more this year. So come along and relax in the company of ancient figs trees, enjoy refreshments and entertainment. All refreshments are free but we ask for a donation to cover costs.
The gardens are required to be opened to the public on an annual basis as part of a planning condition granted in 1989.
