Worthing is ready for the high flyers at Worthing Birdman 13/14 August
8th August 2011
The event on the South coast - The Worthing International Birdman Competition - is ready for take-off!
The fun begins on Saturday 13 August from 11.35am to 1pm where the serious flyers – Condors and Leonardo’s - show off their flying expertise in their hi-spec flying machines boasting wingspans of up to 30 feet. In a first for the UK, aviators will be carrying out test flights in a brand new Vulcan class, which allows flying machines with a wingspan of up to 40 feet to launch.
On Sunday 14 August from 12 noon to 2pm the ‘fun’ flyers (Kingfisher class), will launch themselves off the top of the 35 foot platform into the depths of the water below in the hope they can stay in the air for a few minutes (normally seconds!). Our Condor and Leonardo aviators will then take to the skies for their 2nd attempt to fly over 100m and the £10,000 jackpot prize.
Throughout the afternoon there’s great family entertainment after the flying when World Class Freestyle Jet Ski display team seen at locations such as Thorpe Park and Alton Towers will power through the water showing off their amazing tricks. There‘s lots more entertainment too from the Beach Stage over the whole weekend with “Shark Tale” showing on the big screen on Saturday.
The free event attracts crowds of 10,000 plus is organised by Sharon Clarke of Worthing Town Centre Initiative, supported by Worthing council and costs over £60K to run.
