Worthing Museum’s new curiosity shop

Worthing Museum’s new curiosity shop

11th January 2012

Worthing Mayor Ann Barlow today officially cut the ribbon on the new entrance and shop of Worthing Museum and Art Gallery which has been transformed to offer a real ‘wow’ factor.  Gone are the 1970s shop fittings and instead Edwardian sash windows have been uncovered, and the splendour of the original parquet flooring restored.

Visitors to the new Museum shop and reception will also be greeted by three recently recruited apprentices as part of the Worthing Council’s commitment to helping young people into employment. The two-year Cultural and Creative Apprenticeships include a training package offered in conjunction with Sussex Downs College.

As she opened the shop the Mayor said: “Worthing Museum is a celebration of our culture, tradition and heritage of the past. I am delighted to be here today to celebrate the opening of the new reception and shop and investment in our town’s future. Tourism is an important part of our town’s economy with the Museum being Worthing’s jewel in the crown”

Thanks to a £30,000 investment from Worthing Borough Council, the reception area is now fully accessible to disabled staff and visitors and provides a safe and healthy place for the new Museum team to work train and welcome visitors.

On offer are a veritable treasure trove of bespoke jewellery, arts and crafts from local artists, sweets, treats, vintage accessories and a new range of quirky souvenirs. The shop provides the opportunity to pick up the perfect memento of a visit to Worthing, or that special something for family or friends or even to treat yourself!
